We kicked off the year talking about travel as personal growth. And it’s no coincidence that I added travel as a Further category, along with health, wealth, and wisdom.

Since then, I’ve found myself preoccupied with the topic. I have trips planned this year to Panama and Europe, so maybe that has something to do with it.

Who doesn’t want to travel the world and transcend their current selves? Well, as we all know — lots of people. And that’s a shame.

But it’s much more of a shame for those who do want to experience the adventure of world travel, and yet feel it’s beyond them. The perceived economics of it are enough to discourage plenty.

The world is quickly changing in ways that can help, though. And that means the world has become smaller and more accessible for more people.

Airbnb and the rise of credit cards that allow you to turn your normal expenditures into free flights and hotels are just two developments that make exotic travel attainable. But mostly, we just need to realize that if we really want to travel, there’s a way to make it happen.

That said, today I’ve got a Further original for you. It’s from Mary Kay Seales, a teacher who describes herself as “a decidedly not rich, not famous, everyday working stiff” … who just happens to spend every summer on the French Riviera.
