Today, the idea of the “side hustle” has become popular, usually to make extra cash. And there’s certainly nothing wrong with that if you need to supplement your income.
The more important concern is losing your job in your 50s, which is statistically likely and very difficult to recover from. The “eggs in one basket” situation is what you’ve got to escape, first and foremost.
I’ve always got a “side hustle” going even as a location-independent entrepreneur, but for me that means I work on my next project once the current initiative gets to a certain point.
So, if traditional employment is your current situation, you want to move from the one “client” (your employer) to a self-employment role with multiple clients.
Likewise, if you already have your own client services business, you want to diversify with products and other income sources. This requires an integrated approach to new opportunities.
The best of both worlds is to strategically begin your location-independent business with multiple streams of income in mind right from the beginning.
I call this the Personal Enterprise approach.

Hidden Valley Dinero
What if you could get paid to move your digital business to a European valley dotted with thermal pools and medieval villages?
That’s exactly what’s happening in Spain’s Ambroz Valley, where the regional government is offering people who can work from anywhere up to €15,000 (approximately $16,620) to relocate.

Stating the Obvious
A recent Newsweek poll reveals what many of us already suspect: traditional retirement timing is likely headed for a major shift.
But here’s what’s fascinating. This forced evolution might actually be our greatest opportunity.

Trump Turbulence
Donald Trump’s tariff talk has created significant market turbulence, with threatened levies of 25% on imports from Canada and Mexico, 10% on energy products from Canada, and additional tariffs on Chinese imports.
These aren’t just abstract policy decisions. They’re reshaping the economic landscape that Generation X needs to navigate as we approach traditional retirement age.

The Two Little Words That Will Set You Free
By Trudi Roth
Ever feel the Universe is working in overdrive to send you a message?
That happened to me recently when three friends texted me about author and podcaster Mel Robbins’ new book, The Let Them Theory. Then, a fourth friend sent me a copy.
Maybe it was a response to my whining about how my adult kids don’t listen to me or my making excuses (again) for holding onto a client I should’ve let go of years ago. Perhaps my friend was sick of me rehashing the same fight I have periodically with my husband.
If any of that sounds familiar, let me tell you more about Let Them.
Set Them Free
The Let Them Theory is what it sounds like: stop wasting your time and energy obsessing over what other people think, say, and do, and accept the fact that you have no agency over them.
Let them eat crappy food. Let them be cranky. Let them judge you. Let them drive infuriatingly slow in the fast lane.
Simple, right? Actually, it’s not. You’re bucking biology because your brain is hardwired to seek control and keep you “safe.” But trying to dictate others’ lives is a losing battle that saps your time, energy, and happiness. Once you let go of the illusion of control, you start to take back your power, as Robbins advises:
Let Them show you who they are. Their disrespect doesn’t say anything about you. How you respond does.
That last sentence — “how you respond does” — holds the key to your freedom. Without taking responsibility for your part, you’ll come up empty, with only a false sense of security, superiority, and confidence to show for it. (Well, that and burned bridges and a lack of friends.)
This brings us to the second half of Robbins’ equation.
Allow Me
“Let Me” is your end of the bargain. It helps you shift your focus from what you can’t control to what you can, such as your behavior, attitude, values, desires, and actions. Some soul-searching is involved, too, because choosing your response entails owning your stuff.
So, for example, if you’re hurt because you weren’t invited to a dinner party, let them leave you out. But be sure to investigate what’s underneath your pain. If it’s that you miss the friends who didn’t include you, maybe it’s time to focus on fostering your relationships.
Let Me is the real game-changer. It reminds you of this crucial truth:
You are capable of creating anything that you want if you are willing to put the time and energy into working for it.
All you have to do is let go of being petty, resentful, and focused on how everyone else needs to change to make your life better. Only you can do that for you. That’s why I was sent The Let Them Theory — the friend who ordered it for me was me.
