How to Design Your Ideal Life

Applying design thinking to creating your ideal life is gaining in popularity. And because work is so central to our lives, that’s usually the place to start.

Problem is, people often have no idea what type of work will provide the meaning, purpose, and autonomy that lead to true satisfaction. Rather than some concept of “following your passion,” people generally discover work they love by experiencing the work itself.

This makes the design process difficult without trial and error. So what if instead of trying to figure out what you love in the abstract, you first worked to eliminate the things about work you know you hate (or at least strongly dislike)?

Here are my thoughts on the “subtraction” approach, and how it worked for me:

A little worry is probably necessary in order to motivate us to do things that need to get done. On the other hand, excessive worry tends to keep us incapacitated to the point of indecision and inaction.

Mission Control

You know how difficult it is to continuously exert effortful control when feeling mentally depleted and fatigued. The science tells us so: engaging in tasks that require self-control might actually reduce our performance in subsequent tasks. New findings, however, suggest there’s more to the picture than what ego-depletion says.
