Hey there, and welcome to this week’s Further.
We kicked off the beginning of last year touching on design thinking as applied to all aspects of your life. I read Designing Your Life: How to Build a Well-Lived, Joyful Life over the holidays, so the beginning of 2017 seems like a perfect time to look at the topic in a bit more detail.
The book is a great read, and I’m sold on applying design thinking principles to my own life. Since I went a little longer than I usually do, I gave this article its own home:
Is This the Year You’ll Design the Life You Want?
Also, now that we’ve added Travel to our typical topics of Health, Wealth, and Wisdom, I’m taking a less rigid approach to the categories. From now on, I’ll simply point you toward the top ten relevant resources I’ve come across for the week, along with my scintillating commentary.
Enjoy!
Keep going-
Brian Clark

Training Day
I’ve never worked with a personal trainer, but I’m considering it. People who’ve done it say the accountability for showing up that comes with paying for help is the biggest benefit. That said, who you work with matters, so choose carefully.

.44 Magnesium
I found out for the first last year how severely magnesium depleted the typical person is. Apparently, magnesium may greatly improve the effectiveness of your exercise and improve fitness performance. It can also help you sleep, which is why I started supplementing with it.
This Magic Ingredient Can Transform Your Fitness Routine
Pound Count
I’ve always heard that it takes 3,500 calories to gain a pound, and conversely, that you had to burn that many excess calories to lose a pound. Turns out it’s a bit more complex than that.

Produce Department
We’ve talked about some of these before, such as establishing a morning routine. If you’re inspired to design your work day for maximum productivity, these 6 things are a great start.

Change for Dollars
Personal growth changes your personality for the better. So, if attracting money is important to you, you’ll be happy to discover that you can develop the thing that leads to monetary success (hint: it’s not your IQ).

Wanderlust

If that last article inspired you, here is a huge (seriously, it’s bigly) list of travel resources from someone who’s been there, done that. Eminently bookmarkable.

Brain Drain
Want to improve your brain? Learn something new, every day. So far in 2017 I’ve carved out time to take Spanish lessons, just 20-30 minutes each morning. On the other hand, “brain games” and other mental training techniques that are supposedly designed to keep you sharp don’t really work.
Brain Training Is a Good Idea That Didn’t Work
Grand Theft Actualization
Every time I cite research that says you should do what you’re intrinsically motivated to do, rather than chase external benefits that you “should” achieve, I think of the video game objection. As in, “All Jimmy wants to do is play video games, you’re telling me that’s good?” Well, yes … to a degree.

Discomfort Zone
“We need to get out of balance, out of our set routine, and out of our comfort zone. We must seek opportunities to feel clumsy, awkward, embarrassed, insecure, and self-conscious. That is such a crazy thing to do. And it works so well.”
Why Discomfort Can Be So Good for You
