How to Beat Procrastination

August 8, 2017 by Brian Clark

Procrastinate No More!

To me, most procrastination advice is worthless. It’s usually a rallying cry to willpower, which, if we had it … well, we wouldn’t be procrastinating.

I’m also a firm believer that some forms of procrastination simply mean that we’re not ready to act. We’re working it out, and when we get it, we’ll do it.

But, sometimes we know exactly what we need to do, and yet find ways to avoid the work. That’s the kind of procrastination that becomes a dream killer.

So, Claire Emerson gives us a Further original that focuses on the two true keys — identifying emotional barriers and developing smart habits. Not your usual procrastination advice:

Annoy Polloi

You need a somewhat flexible strategy to cope with annoying people. The immediate options boil down to fight, flight, freeze, surrender, holding your ground, strategizing, meta-communication, and self-reflection.

Model Thinking

Following up on last week’s focus on mental models, here’s a deeper look at one meta-model. Why? You must find an edge. You must think differently to be your best you.

Loneliness makes the areas of the brain that are vigilant for threat more active, a new study finds. This can make people who are socially isolated more abrasive and defensive.
