This Week’s Top Resources for
Living a Prosperous Life

August 15, 2018 by Brian Clark

Much effort, much prosperity. ~ Euripedes

I like the word prosperity.

Being prosperous generally refers to material wealth and success, but more broadly it also encompasses good health and happiness. In that sense, prosperity entails an overall state of flourishing, thriving, and good fortune — generally due to hard work at something more meaningful than the accumulation of mere money.

So, when I chose the new headline for the homepage of Further a while back — Live Long and Prosper — it wasn’t because I’m a Trekkie (I’m not at all, if you’re wondering). It just seemed like the perfect summary of what Further stands for.

If it weren’t for the Star Trek connotation, I’d put those four words on a t-shirt. Instead, I’ve got some other options for you to choose from in the all new Further store.

I love t-shirts, so I thought it would be fun to make a few based on the themes we discuss around here. And since I’m not the type to ask for donations, if you want to help out with the server and emails costs of producing the newsletter, you can do it by snagging some cool Further gear of your own.

Here are the initial selections:

  • The Further Logo Shirt
  • The “Keep Going” Shirt
  • The “Keep Going” Hoodie
  • The “Got Grit?” Shirt
  • The “Rise Above” Shirt
  • The “Keep Going and Rise Above” Shirt

All versions come in your choice of white or black, with sizes ranging from small to 4XL. The material is super soft and lightweight with just the right amount of stretch, and every selection is comfortable and flattering for both men and women.

Check them all out here.

The Squirrel! Approach to Dieting

Researchers have discovered that cognitive load can decrease the effect of temptation on both thinking and behavior. In other words, when you’re distracted by something else, it’s easier to resist the temptation to eat foods that you normally crave.

Lift Yourself Up

I’m no fan of the gym, so strength training these days is of the bodyweight variety. In this do-anywhere, bodyweight workout, you’ll push hard for 20 minutes to create core stability, open up tight hips, and get a much-needed cardio benefit that’s way more effective than jogging.

Stretch Armstrong

If you’re exercising to lose weight, be well, and improve mood, you should be stretching. It will help with muscle remodeling, connective tissue strengthening, range-of-motion improvement, joint alignment, and potentially blood flow during subsequent exercise.

Automatic Leadership

Have you ever wondered what separates the good leaders from the great? It’s not raw, natural talent or innate skill. No, it’s something more impactful and difficult to master — changing basic habits.

Morning Phase

If I don’t get the important stuff done in the morning, well … it tends not to get done. How can you snatch victory from the jaws of defeat and reset your day for the better?

Withdrawal Symptoms

You want to create a spending plan, but you don’t want to make an intricately detailed line-item budget or budgeting worksheet. Consider creating a budget presented in five categories that represents a “broad overview.”

Stay the Course

When the going gets tough in the market, people invested in stocks have the natural impulse to pull out to cut their losses. By using an income allocation plan instead, you can ride out downturns more confidently.

The Motivated Brain

Instead of wishing for motivation or hunting for more motivation, think about the different types of motivators we experience, and what’s going on in our brains when we experience them. We can’t always engineer motivation, but by understanding the forces behind it, we can learn to identify how we work best.

Through the Looking Glass

We form our beliefs based on what comes to us from the world through the window of perception, but then those beliefs act like a lens, focusing on what they want to see. That doesn’t bode well for the idea that policy or other debates can be solved by simply giving people accurate information.
