A Vibrant Community for
Midlife Reinvention

Midlife can be a wondrous phase.

Sure, it can be a little rough in your 40s. But that’s just an indication that you’re on the cusp of significant change.

Meanwhile, the world is changing rapidly (and often radically) all around us. As people in our 40s and 50s (a.k.a. Generation X) this has been the story of our entire lives.

We’re not the forgotten generation … we’re the resilient generation. And it’s now time to change and adapt on our own terms.

Of course, it’s smart to have a winning framework on our side. And more importantly … supportive like-minded people to help us along on this phase of the journey.

SMART Goals that Lead to Lasting Habits

What is midlife reinvention anyway?

At it’s core, it’s who we want to be next. And since who we are is what we do, this involves one or more challenging goals that if met will redefine an aspect of who we are.

In other words, we’re trying to become a better version of ourselves. Not as society or friends and family define it, but as we define it.

We’re going to eat better and get fit. Maybe learn a new language or instrument. Invest more wisely and perhaps even change careers or start a business.

Maybe we should do all of the above together.

After all, making meaningful change in your life is tough. Studies show that less than 25% of people stay committed to a goal after 30 days, and only 8% actually accomplish what they set out to do.

To start right, we need SMART goals. In this case, SMART means:

  • Specific: Well defined, clear, and unambiguous
  • Measurable: With specific criteria that measure your progress toward the accomplishment of the goal
  • Achievable: Attainable and not impossible to achieve
  • Realistic: Within reach, realistic, and relevant to your life purpose
  • Timely: With a clearly defined timeline, including a starting date and a target date. The purpose is to create urgency.

From there, you need a few other crucial elements:

  • Education: Whether you want to get fit, invest better, or start a business, it’s important to have credible insight into the latest science, trends, and techniques so that your efforts are effective and sound.
  • Motivation: Getting started is more than half the battle, but often life intervenes and threatens your ability to keep going. Making your goal achievement process more like a game with incremental rewards ups your motivation significantly.
  • Accountability: This is the big one. Committing to someone that you will achieve your goal ups your probability of actually doing it to 65%. Having ongoing accountability interactions with people you’ve committed to increases your odds to a whopping 95%.

Take all of that together, and you’ve got Well + Wealthy. A new community from the folks at Further specifically designed to help you become the person you want to be.

A Rewarding Community Experience

In Well + Wealthy, we add in a motivational component that’s both fun and effective. It’s all about small rewards that keep you going.

A massive new study published in Nature involving 61,293 American gym members took a look at the role of small rewards in getting people motivated to exercise and maintaining that motivation. Participants were offered rewards in the form of points that had a small cash value:

The best-performing program paid people 22 cents per gym visit. If they missed one day, they got an extra 9 cents on top of it for their next visit, as long as they missed only one.

You may have heard advice that says if you miss a workout, don’t beat yourself up about it. Just make sure you do the next scheduled workout. Turns out that advice is spot on, and apparently even tiny rewards help you to get back on track.

Of course, there’s more to it, with social accountability a major factor. Mark Beauchamp, a professor of exercise and health psychology at the University of British Columbia, sums it up this way:

Exercise is a very complex behavior, and inexpensive nudge-type interventions that provide marginal behavior shifts can have major impacts. But it’s not just about starting a behavior. It’s about sticking with it, and social structures could boost that. When people feel socially connected to exercise, they are more likely to do it long-term.

In addition to education and accountability, this new research says to add encouraging messages and tiny rewards to the mix. More people are exercising than ever before and getting fit is a growing trend — and we now have a winning recipe for more people to succeed.

And it’s not just about exercise! This same combination of accountability and rewards can help you achieve anything you set your mind to, whether learning a language or starting a business.

When it comes to the reward component, you’re already familiar with $MOVE thanks to the Further subscriber referral program. And you may be using the $MOVE you’ve already earned to gain access to Well + Wealthy today.

Once inside the Well + Wealthy community, you’ll earn $MOVE rewards to use in other ways. When you start a goal, complete a workout or other task, and get back on track after missing a day or two, you’ll be earning $MOVE while headed to the big reward of achieving a goal that may have eluded you in the past.

It’s going to be lots of fun no matter what. And with our research-backed community design, it will also be highly effective.

What Members Are Saying

Here’s what people are saying about our first fitness challenge:

Woohoo!  Thanks so much for getting this going and seeing it through.  I now have a habit and itch to get out and walk!  Thanks for all the $MOVE too!  Also thanks to everyone who helped us/me with info and support!

Pat Williams

I am thrilled I’ve done this challenge. I do think I’ve managed to create a habit of exercising daily. I am also surprised I’ve managed to do more than just walking… Thanks, everyone for the support and encouragement. This has been a great experience.

Luciana Damasceno

I’ve said it before, but I’ve learned a lot about myself during the challenge, and despite the fact I didn’t end up where I thought I would be by this point, I’m okay with that.

It turns out the unexpected path, while difficult, forced me to face some truths about my health and wellness I had been ignoring and/or avoiding (and would have continued to ignore/avoid) had I not faced the challenges I did early on. If anything, they made me stronger and better prepared for the journey. ?

Thank you all for your support, your inspiration, your perseverance…for everything over the past 12+ weeks. You are an amazing group of individuals — I couldn’t have made it this far without you. Seriously, from the bottom of my heart, thank you! ?

Harley Christensen

This challenge has really got me focused on moving every day. In fact, like Friday of this last week when I didn’t move purposefully, it was on my mind.

That’s awesome… that is how habits are formed. I feel like I’ve got my body trained to want to move every day. Again, awesome.

Geoff Monical

The biggest aha moments for me were experiencing the power of consistency by “lowering the bar” and hearing that any type of movement counts. Workouts don’t have to be 45 min to an hour. Since this challenge, I’ve added more variety, like 12 minutes of dancing (badly) or 20 minutes of low-impact cardio. This makes it so that I can do something even on low-energy or busy days.

Before this challenge, if I missed one workout, it could turn into two, which would turn into, “well, this week looks bad already, so let’s take the week off.” Changing my mindset to do something, anything, and it counts, kept the momentum going.
